Until fairly recently any person who indicated concern about the wreckage of the environment raised skeptical eyebrows. Those days are over, and it appears we all recognize our role in stopping and conceivably reversing the damage being done to our planet. The experts are agreed that we are unable to adjust things for the better without everyone’s active contribution. These kinds of changes need to start taking place, and each individual family needs to become more environmentally friendly. The kitchen is a good starting point saving energy by going much more green.

Why don’t we begin with something really easy, changing the light bulbs. Complete this for the entire house, not only the kitchen. You really need to replace your incandescent lights by using energy-saver, compact fluorescent light bulbs. They cost a little bit more initially, but they last ten times longer, and use less electricity. Using these kinds of longer-lasting lightbulbs has the benefit that many fewer lightbulbs make it into landfills. You also have to obtain the routine of turning off the lights when there is nobody in a area. The family spends a lot of time in the kitchen area, and how frequently does the kitchen light go on in the morning and is left on all day long. Certainly this also happens in other rooms, not merely the kitchen. Make a routine of having the lights on only when they are necessary, and you’ll be astonished at the amount of electricity you save.

The kitchen on its own gives you many small ways by which energy and money can be saved. Eco-friendly living is not really that tough. Mostly, all it takes is a little common sense.
