Until fairly recently any person who expressed concern about the wreckage of the environment raised skeptical eyebrows. That’s a thing of the past now, with all people being aware of the problems besetting the planet as well as the shared responsibility we have for turning things around. According to the industry experts, to clean up the surroundings we are all going to have to make some improvements. This should happen soon and living in methods more friendly to the environment should become an objective for every individual family. The kitchen area is a good starting point saving energy by going much more green.

Why don’t we begin with something quite simple, changing the light bulbs. Accomplish this for your house, not merely the kitchen. You need to replace your incandescent lights along with energy-saver, compact fluorescent light bulbs. They cost a little bit more in the beginning, but they last ten times longer, and use much less electricity. Utilizing these longer-lasting lightbulbs has the particular benefit that many fewer lightbulbs make it into landfills. It goes further than merely exchanging the lights, though; turning off lights that aren’t needed is definitely another good thing to do. In the kitchen is where you’ll usually find members of a family, and often the lights are not turned off until the last person goes to bed. Certainly this also happens in different rooms, not merely the kitchen. Make a habit of having the lights on only when they are needed, and you’ll be amazed at the amount of electricity you save.

From the above it should be obvious that just in the kitchen, by itself, there are many little opportunities for saving energy and money. It is reasonably easy to live green, after all. It’s about being sensible, usually.

  11. Provide to taste salt and pepper
  12. Prepare 1 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves
  13. Use 1/4 cup vegetable oil (for frying)
  14. Use 1-2 tablespoons water
Instructions to make Rice cakes:
  1. In a large bowl mix all the ingredients except the oil (reserve some green onion greens to garnish)
  2. Add a tablespoon of water and mix well. if the mixture is still to dry add another tablespoon of the water. the mixture should b fairly dry but just coming together
  3. Heat the oil in a pan or skillet. wet ur hands and form balls of the rice mixture (the size depends on u; u can make them golf sized or tennis ball sized)
  4. Flatten the balls into flat cakes making the edges flatter than the centre this will give the cakes both a crispy and soft texture
  5. Fry the cakes in the hot oil on medium-low heat till they get golden brown and crispy on each side (around 2-3 min each side). Drain the oil thoroughly (the cakes can absorb oil quite well) so squeeze the oil out gently and then drain them on paper towels
  6. Remove them on a plate, garnish it with the green onions and serve it with whatever dip or sauce u want something tangy and spicy is best. I served it with my tomato chutney. The recipe is on my profile
  7. NOTE: this makes a lot. You can keep the leftover mixture in the fridge for a day. Add flour or water as needed and cook next day
