Changing light bulbs is definitely as good a place to start as any. Obviously you shouldn’t confine this to only the kitchen. Compact fluorescent lightbulbs are energy-savers, and you will need to use them in place of incandescent lights. They cost somewhat more initially, but they last ten times longer, and use less electricity. Changing the light bulbs would keep a lot of bulbs out of the landfills, and that is good. You also have to get the practice of turning off the lights when there is nobody in a area. The kitchen lights specifically will often be left on the entire day, just because the family tends to spend a lot of time there. Of course this also happens in some other rooms, not just the kitchen. Make a routine of having the lights on only when they are required, and you’ll be amazed at the amount of electricity you save.

From the above it ought to be clear that just in the kitchen, by itself, there are many little opportunities for saving energy and money. Environmentally friendly living is not that hard. Typically, all it will take is a bit of common sense.
